The Turks and Caicos Islands is exploring how artificial intelligence could transform government services and improve weather forecasting, as officials look at international technology solutions that could be adapted for the territory.

Minister of Innovation, Technology and Energy E. Jay Saunders was scheduled to attend the Global AI & Digital Summit in South Korea from October 19 to 22, following an invitation from the World Bank. The visit was intended to examine how digital innovation can improve public administration and support economic development across the islands.

One potential application is AI-assisted government services available around the clock. Saunders has identified automated customer support as an early opportunity, alongside possible uses of artificial intelligence in tourism and healthcare.

Weather forecasting is another priority. Discussions with Director of Meteorology Dr. Holly Hamilton have focused on the potential for AI-driven models to produce faster, more detailed forecasts for localised heavy rainfall, marine conditions, aviation and tropical weather systems. More timely forecasts could strengthen hurricane preparedness and early-warning decisions in a territory exposed to severe weather.

During the planned South Korea visit, Saunders was also expected to examine smart-city technology at the Anyang Smart City Integrated Control Center and robotics and cloud computing at NAVER 1784. These systems offer examples of how connected data and automation can support public services.

However, the proposed AI applications remain under consideration. Saunders said any initiative identified would first need Cabinet consideration and, if supported, the necessary budget approval before implementation.

The discussions signal a growing interest in digital government and AI-powered public services in the Turks and Caicos Islands, with future progress dependent on practical planning, funding and official approval.
