A community recycling initiative in southern Saint Lucia has collected approximately 475 pounds of electronic waste, highlighting the growing importance of responsible technology disposal across the island.
The Laborie/Augier Community E-Waste and Aluminium Cans Drop-Off took place at Laborie Market Square on October 10, 2026, attracting almost 100 residents who brought unwanted electronics and household appliances for safe collection and recycling. The results were reported on October 17.
Organised by Greening the Caribbean (GtC) Inc. and the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority, the event formed part of the Integrated E-Waste Management System initiative, funded by IDB Lab.
Items collected included mobile phones, tablets, laptops, televisions, computer monitors, fans, kettles, microwaves and other small electronic devices. Proper disposal helps prevent discarded equipment from entering ordinary waste streams, where components and materials may pose environmental risks.
The initiative brought together community volunteers, businesses and public organisations, including Massy Stores, LUCELEC, Invest Saint Lucia, the Laborie Credit Union and the Caribbean Youth Environment Network. Their contributions supported collection, logistics, public awareness and recycling efforts.
The event was held in recognition of International E-Waste Day on October 14, helping raise awareness about the need to manage electronic products responsibly as technology use continues to grow.
The collection shows how community participation can help reduce electronic waste while encouraging better recycling habits. Organisers’ wider initiative aims to strengthen e-waste management practices and support a cleaner, more sustainable Saint Lucia.
