ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda — Antigua and Barbuda is strengthening support for people living with sickle cell disease with the opening of a new dedicated sickle cell support unit, adding another specialised resource to the country’s public health system.

The initiative is part of the Ministry of Health’s broader focus on improving access to healthcare services and providing more targeted support for communities managing long-term health conditions.

The new unit is expected to provide a stronger point of support for the sickle cell community, while helping patients and families connect with appropriate healthcare resources and guidance.

The Ministry has also been highlighting wider health-sector developments, including the graduation of the 2026 medical intern class at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and expanded community health activities.

For Antigua and Barbuda, the development highlights the growing importance of specialised care, patient support and community-based health services as the country continues to strengthen its healthcare system.
