CAPESTERRE-BELLE-EAU, Guadeloupe — Guadeloupe’s political debate is gaining fresh momentum after the Union Populaire pour la Libération de la Guadeloupe (UPLG) held its political rentrée in Capesterre-Belle-Eau on Saturday, October 3.
The gathering, held under the theme “La Guadeloupe face à ses responsabilités”, puts questions surrounding Guadeloupe’s political future, social priorities and territorial interests back into the spotlight.
The UPLG’s return comes at a time when local political forces are reassessing their positions following the 2026 municipal elections and a series of ongoing debates about the territory’s future.
The movement’s political activity is particularly significant because the question of Guadeloupe’s political status and greater autonomy remains a long-standing issue within sections of the island’s political landscape.
The event is expected to contribute to renewed discussions about self-determination, local decision-making and Guadeloupe’s relationship with France, while potentially shaping political conversations ahead of future electoral contests.
With political parties and movements already beginning to position themselves around major local issues, the UPLG’s latest mobilisation adds another voice to an increasingly active Guadeloupe political debate.
