The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) is facing unusually high patient volumes, prompting the major Kingston-area referral hospital to advise members of the public to consider alternative healthcare options for non-emergency conditions.

UHWI, a 579-bed regional referral hospital, said its emergency department is currently experiencing patient numbers beyond its normal capacity. The hospital warned that patients with less urgent conditions should expect longer-than-usual waiting times, while critically ill patients will continue to receive priority through the emergency triage system.

The situation is also being affected by the number of seriously ill patients requiring admission and limited ward space, according to reports. UHWI nevertheless stressed that its Accident and Emergency Department remains operational and that medical, nursing and support teams continue to provide care.

The hospital handles serious emergencies including major trauma, suspected heart attacks and strokes, acute respiratory distress and urgent surgical cases.

For Jamaicans experiencing non-emergency health problems, UHWI is encouraging them to consider their nearest health centre, doctor or primary-care provider where appropriate. The development highlights the continuing pressure on Jamaica's healthcare system and the importance of strengthening access to care outside major referral hospitals.
