The University of Puerto Rico’s Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-RCM) temporarily evacuated the Guillermo Arbona Building on October 1 after reports of unusual odors raised concerns about a possible gas leak.

Puerto Rico firefighters responded to the facility and conducted an inspection while the building was evacuated as a precautionary safety measure. Initial reports said the source of the odor was unknown.

Following the inspection, the Puerto Rico Fire Bureau determined that there was no gas leak or dangerous condition inside the building. Officials subsequently determined that it was safe for academic and administrative activities to resume.

No injuries or property damage were reported in connection with the incident. The Administration of Medical Services also said that operations at the wider Centro Médico complex, including hospital services, emergency rooms and clinics, continued normally and were not affected.

The incident prompted a precautionary emergency response at one of Puerto Rico’s major medical and academic facilities, but the subsequent inspection provided reassurance that no hazardous gas release had occurred.
