NEW AMSTERDAM, Guyana — New Amsterdam is preparing for a major month-long celebration as Town Day 2026 brings entertainment, culture and community activities to Berbice.

The celebrations are scheduled to run from September 18 through October 31, marking the 135th anniversary of New Amsterdam with a programme designed to attract residents, visitors and members of the Guyanese diaspora.

The programme will combine cultural performances, entertainment, sporting activities, religious events and educational programmes, giving the historic town a packed calendar of activities over several weeks.

Organisers are also looking to make the celebrations beneficial beyond entertainment, with proceeds from this year's Town Day activities earmarked for further improvements to Esplanade Park.

The event provides an opportunity to showcase New Amsterdam's history and cultural identity while bringing businesses, community groups, performers and residents together.

With activities continuing into October, New Amsterdam Town Day could become one of the Berbice region's key cultural and entertainment attractions of the season, while also encouraging visitors from other parts of Guyana and abroad.

The celebrations are expected to generate renewed attention for local performers, community organisations and the town's growing events scene.
