The Government of Guyana is developing a new migration policy to address the country’s changing labour needs as major economic projects and new industries expand.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced the policy direction during a recent interview, saying Guyana is already relying on foreign workers, particularly in the construction sector, to support its rapid economic development.
Ali said the policy needs to be flexible, modern and dynamic as Guyana prepares for new economic activity linked to natural gas and other industries. He identified potential developments including a large-scale urea plant, an alumina plant and hyperscale data centres.
The President also projected that millions of people could be moving through Guyana’s economy by 2030 for business, work and leisure. The government is therefore examining migration and human-capital needs as part of its longer-term development planning.
