The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has shut down an unlicensed gold-trading operation at Tamakay Landing in the Mazaruni Mining District, with gold, equipment and cash seized during an enforcement operation.
The GGMC Enforcement Team suspended the shop's operations on September 28 after inspectors found that it was trading gold without the required approvals and licences. Two people were detained by the Guyana Police Force as investigations continued.
The Ministry of Natural Resources said the action forms part of its continuing enforcement efforts against illegal mining and related activities across Guyana's mining districts.
Authorities are reminding mining-sector stakeholders that gold-trading and other operations must comply with the country's licensing and regulatory requirements.
