A fatal traffic collision in southern Belize has claimed the life of a 59-year-old Guatemalan labourer following a crash at the junction of Red Bank Village and the T.V. Ramos Highway.

Police responded to the scene at approximately 10:45 a.m. on September 5, where they found a Toyota Tundra pickup and a motorcycle involved in the collision.

According to preliminary police information, the motorcycle was travelling south along the T.V. Ramos Highway before the rider attempted to turn onto Red Bank Road. The motorcycle subsequently collided with the front portion of the pickup.

The injured man was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing surgery. He was pronounced dead at approximately 1:01 p.m.

Police processed the scene and prepared a sketch plan as part of the investigation. The driver of the pickup has been detained pending further investigation.

The incident adds to continuing concerns over road safety, motorcycle crashes and traffic fatalities in Belize, particularly along major highways and junctions.
