ST GEORGE’S, Grenada — Grenada’s September Assizes have been postponed, disrupting the scheduled hearing of 85 criminal matters at the High Court.

The September sitting was due to begin on September 22, but proceedings were delayed as air-conditioning problems at the St George’s High Court facility remained unresolved. The court is currently operating from the CLICO building.

The affected criminal cases are assigned to High Courts 1 and 2, while civil matters in High Courts 3 and 4 are also affected by the facility disruption.

Authorities have not yet announced a new start date for the September criminal sitting. The 85 matters will have to be relisted once the cooling system is restored and a revised court timetable is established.

Despite the postponement, some High Court functions continue. Matters before the Master of the High Court are being handled virtually, while urgent applications, including bail and injunction matters, can still be brought before the court.

The delay comes as Grenada’s justice system continues working through its criminal case backlog, making the rescheduling of the 85 matters an important development for defendants, families and the wider legal community.
