ROSEAU, Dominica — Dominica is preparing a major development framework for the island’s northeast as construction of the international airport advances, with authorities planning to guide new business and investment activity around Woodford Hill, Wesley and surrounding communities.

The government’s Northeast Development Plan is being prepared by the Physical Planning Division and is expected to establish guidelines for the strategic use of land in the region.

The plan will identify opportunities across housing, agriculture, tourism, recreation, commerce and industry, giving residents, landowners and potential investors greater clarity about suitable development.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Melissa Poponne-Skerrit said the airport is expected to create new business, investment and employment opportunities in the northeast.

The government also expects hundreds of acres of land to become available for strategic residential and commercial development, while support is planned in areas including physical planning, construction management, resilient building and skills training.

For local entrepreneurs and investors, the development plan could provide a framework for preparing businesses and properties for increased economic activity associated with the airport.
