Belize is preparing a formal diplomatic protest to Guatemala following a reported entry by a Guatemalan military aircraft into Belizean airspace on September 24, 2026.

According to Belizean defence officials, the aircraft, identified as FAG706, entered Belizean airspace from the east at approximately 7:29 p.m. and circled near Lighthouse Reef. Officials said the aircraft later disappeared from secondary radar, but continued to be tracked using primary radar.

The aircraft reportedly remained in Belizean airspace until approximately 8:40 p.m., when it departed through the southern area near the Sarstoon River.

Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is preparing a protest note to Guatemala and requesting an explanation regarding the aircraft’s movements. Officials said Belize did not authorize the reported flight.

The incident comes amid the longstanding Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute, which remains before the International Court of Justice. Guatemala has maintained that its military operations comply with national and international law.
