The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) has rejected Prime Minister John Briceño’s response to a list of 11 demands, saying the government has not addressed the issues as submitted.
In a letter dated September 24, 2026, NTUCB General Secretary Timothy Dami said the Prime Minister’s response, delivered on September 15, came after the union’s stated deadline and did not resolve several outstanding matters.
Among the issues identified by the union are the Vocational-Technical salary scale, two back-pay matters involving members of the Belize National Teachers’ Union, and the vacant Ombudsman position.
The NTUCB said it is preparing additional activities and actions and stated that these would increase until the union’s 11 demands are addressed. The development adds a new dimension to ongoing discussions between Belize’s government and organised labour over public-sector concerns.
Prime Minister Briceño has also been attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, with Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde serving as Acting Prime Minister during his absence.
