Suriname has stepped up its response to a confirmed avian influenza outbreak, with the National Coordination Centre for Disaster Management (NCCR) deployed to several locations to support containment efforts.
According to NCCR coordinator Jerry Slijngard, teams have so far worked at four to five locations, including areas outside Paramaribo. Their activities include supporting the culling of infected poultry, cleaning and disinfection of affected sites, and providing personnel for the response.
The outbreak has already prompted increased biosecurity measures across Suriname's poultry sector. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries has been working with poultry producers and other agencies to strengthen disease reporting and containment procedures.
The Bureau of Public Health has confirmed the presence of avian influenza through laboratory testing. Additional samples are being sent abroad to determine the specific type of bird flu virus and potentially identify its source.
Authorities are continuing inspections and response measures as new reports emerge, with the objective of limiting further spread within the poultry sector.
