A worker has died following the collapse of a crane at an offshore oil facility in Trinidad and Tobago, prompting questions about the circumstances of the incident and safety procedures in the country’s energy sector.

The incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, at Perenco’s offshore Samaan field. According to reports, the crane structure collapsed onto the offshore platform and parts of a nearby supply vessel while the operator was inside the crane cab. The worker’s body was subsequently transported by boat to the Port of Galeota. <Cite refs={["turn646098view0"]}/>

The worker had not been publicly identified as of Wednesday night. The circumstances leading to the collapse and the precise cause of the fatal incident have not yet been established.

Operations at the Samaan field were reportedly suspended following the incident. A process-safety specialist has called for an investigation to examine both the cause of the collapse and the effectiveness of the emergency response. <Cite refs={["turn646098view0"]}/>

The incident places renewed attention on occupational safety in Trinidad and Tobago’s offshore petroleum industry, where workers carry out complex operations involving heavy machinery and challenging marine conditions.

Investigators now face the task of determining what caused the crane to collapse and whether any safety failures contributed to the tragedy. Authorities and the operator have yet to publicly establish the cause.
