WILLEMSTAD, Curaçao — A KLM flight bound for Curaçao was forced to return to Amsterdam after a power bank caught fire inside the aircraft during the transatlantic journey.
Flight KL735 was traveling from Amsterdam Schiphol to Curaçao on September 17 when the lithium-ion battery device caught fire in the cabin. Crew members quickly contained the incident, but the captain decided to return the Boeing 777 to Schiphol as a precaution.
The aircraft had already been flying for several hours when the decision was made to turn back. Reports indicate that the plane landed safely in Amsterdam after the incident.
KLM has said it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the power bank fire, including whether the device was being charged during the flight. The airline's rules prohibit passengers from using or charging power banks onboard.
The incident has renewed attention on lithium-battery safety and airline rules for portable chargers, particularly as travelers prepare for upcoming holiday and tourism periods.
For Curaçao, the incident also highlights the importance of aviation safety on one of the island's major international air routes.
