Guyana Opposition Faces Standoff Over GECOM Appointments

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Political tensions intensified in Guyana after Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed formally requested consultations with leaders of the country's other parliamentary opposition parties regarding the appointment of new representatives to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

However, APNU leader Aubrey Norton rejected the proposal, arguing that no vacancies currently exist and questioning the constitutional basis for replacing commissioners. The disagreement has prolonged a political deadlock over electoral representation and raised fresh debate about governance and democratic processes.

The issue comes as Guyana's political landscape continues to evolve following the 2025 elections, with analysts watching closely for any developments that could influence future electoral reforms.
