ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Construction work in central Oranjestad led to an unexpected incident on Thursday when heavy demolition equipment struck the Renaissance building while the former Customs building was being dismantled.
The former Customs building is being demolished piece by piece because of its large structural beams. During the operation, a beam was being lowered when the arm of the heavy equipment moved in the wrong direction and made contact with the neighboring Renaissance building.
The impact occurred in the bathroom area of Crystal Casino inside the Renaissance complex.
Authorities responded to the location and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. No injuries were reported, according to the initial report.
The incident highlights the safety challenges involved in major demolition and construction projects in busy parts of Oranjestad, where work sites can operate close to commercial and tourism properties.
Further details about any property damage or additional safety measures were not immediately reported.
