Belize’s government is preparing to review possible new measures to ease the cost-of-living burden, as rising fuel prices add pressure to households and businesses across the country.
Cabinet Minister Francis Fonseca has been tasked with preparing a Cabinet paper outlining options for addressing affordability concerns. According to a report published on October 23, the proposals are expected to be discussed at the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 27.
The announcement comes amid another increase in fuel prices. Premium fuel was reported to be rising by BZ$1.06 to BZ$15.96, while diesel was increasing by BZ$0.34 to BZ$15.96, effective at midnight following the October 23 report. Higher fuel costs can affect transportation, food distribution, household budgets and business operating expenses.
Fonseca said the government is examining several possible approaches, including changes to the tax system, utility-related assistance and existing support programmes. He also pointed to transportation subsidies already introduced by the government.
The administration has not yet announced a new package or confirmed which measures could be adopted. The Cabinet discussion is expected to consider proposals aimed at providing more targeted relief to Belizeans facing increasing everyday expenses.
The issue is likely to remain politically significant as families look for practical support against higher fuel, grocery and utility costs.
The next Cabinet meeting could provide a clearer indication of whether the government will introduce further relief and which households or sectors might benefit.
