The U.S. dollar has reached a new record level in Cuba’s informal foreign-exchange market, rising to 750 Cuban pesos (CUP) on September 29.

The reference rate published by independent outlet elTOQUE placed the dollar at 750 CUP, up 10 pesos from the previous day. The euro also increased, reaching 850 CUP.

The latest movement highlights the continuing gap between informal and official exchange rates. According to EFE, the official rate for individuals was 681 CUP per U.S. dollar on the same day, while separate official rates remained in place for legal entities and certain private businesses.

The dollar had previously reached 700 CUP on September 16, meaning the latest informal-market level represents another significant move within just two weeks.

The exchange-rate development is closely watched by Cuban businesses and consumers because currency movements can affect import costs, pricing and transactions involving foreign currency.

elTOQUE cautions that its informal rate is a reference calculated from offers rather than completed transactions, so actual private-market exchange prices can vary.
