SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Dominican authorities have announced a major maritime anti-drug operation off the coast of Baní, resulting in the seizure of approximately 1.3 tonnes of suspected cocaine.

The operation recovered 1,360 packages of suspected cocaine as well as 30 blocks of a substance believed to be marijuana, according to authorities. Three Dominican nationals were arrested during the operation.

The seizure represents a significant blow to suspected drug-trafficking activity in the southern Caribbean region.

The operation involved the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), Dominican Navy, Air Force and Public Ministry, with intelligence support from national and international agencies, including the US DEA and Colombian Air Force.

Authorities said the operation involved coordinated air, sea and land efforts as security teams pursued the suspected shipment along the Peravia coastline.

The latest seizure highlights the Dominican Republic’s continuing focus on maritime interdiction and international cooperation against organised drug trafficking.

Investigators are expected to continue examining the seized shipment and the circumstances surrounding the arrests as the case moves through the judicial process.

The operation also underscores the strategic importance of the Dominican Republic’s coastline in regional efforts to intercept suspected narcotics shipments.
